Each year, Americans celebrate Veterans Day on November 11. It is a holiday near and dear to my heart because I have several family members who have served in the military, and I am so very proud of their service to this great country. Did you know that November 11 was originally known as Armistice Day and was intended as a day to honor specifically veterans of World War I? In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day – a day to honor the service of ALL U.S. veterans. Whereas Memorial Day is a day to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military, Veterans Day celebrates all veterans – dead and alive. In fact, celebrations surrounding Veterans Day often place a special emphasis on thanking all living U.S. military veterans who have or are currently serving in any U.S. armed service. And it’s the perfect time for all Americans to show appreciation for their service. The best way to thank a military U.S. veteran for his or her service depends on the individual and his or her needs. But the most important thing is to do something to show your gratitude Here are ten ideas to get you thinking about how to be grateful for veterans on November 11.
